Women's Soccer Clinches Winning Season with Victory at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team clinched its first winning season as an NCAA Division I program by beating Grand Canyon University (GCU) 1-0 in double overtime on Sunday at the GCU Soccer Field.

UTRGV (10-6-1, 2-4-0 WAC), which clinched a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday when Seattle U beat Chicago State, won the match in the 105th minute when freshman Sarah Bonney scored on a penalty kick. It was her 11th goal of the season.

UTRGV shutout GCU (7-9-1, 3-2-1) despite playing a player down for more than 86 minutes after senior Evelyn Powell received a red card in the 13th minute. Joanna Lagunas was tagged with a red card in the 99th minute to bring the teams back to even strength. UTRGV withstood 20 shots, including five on goal, and 10 corner kicks, throughout the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Kinga Szemik (6-5-0) made five saves for her fourth shutout. It was UTRGV's eighth shutout of the season.

Blakely Fraasch (7-9-1) made two saves for GCU.

UTRGV closes out the regular season on Saturday at 4 p.m. when it visits New Mexico State. With a win or a tie, UTRGV can clinch at least the No. 5 seed in the WAC Tournament.
