Women's Soccer Closes Out Non-Conference Play With Win Over Texas A&M International

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's soccer team closed out their non-conference schedule with a 5-0 victory over Texas A&M International University for their third straight win on Tuesday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
 
UTRGV (8-2-1) put pressure on Texas A&M International (0-11-0) with 22 shots, including 14 on goal. The UTRGV defense allowed just one shot in the match
 
Freshman Sarah Bonney got the scoring started with at 5:25 with a goal from the right side of the box, her eighth of the season. Sophomore Malia Irvine started the play with a throw in as sophomore Kelsey Jepsen headed the pass to Bonney into the box.
 
Later in the first half, sophomore Diandra Aliaga took the centering pass from freshman Diana Ansah and put it in the goal at 15:39 for her fourth goal of the season that made it 2-0.
 
In the second half, senior Elisa Espino kept the scoring going with her third goal of the season at 57:47, which made it 3-0. Sophomore Daniela Cantu was credited with the assist after a cross pass connected with Espino at the top of the box.
 
Junior Allyson Smith saw her first action of the season and immediately made her presence felt with her first goal of the season making it 4-0 at 79:58. Junior Andreya Barrera got the assist after a pass from the right corner connected with Smith in front of the goal.
 
Sophomore Arnelle Gonzalez put the finishing touches on the scoring as she recorded her first goal of the season. Barrera recorded her second assist of the game and her fourth of the season as she connected with Gonzalez on the right side of the field.
 
Junior Erica Gonzalez picked up the shutout for her third win of the season. Senior Maria Eriksen came in to close out the win as she contributed in the shutout and the first-ever win over Texas A&M International.
 
UTRGV opens up conference play on Friday against UMKC at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. The first 200 fans will receive UTRGV Soccer Scarves with gates opening at 6 p.m.
