SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team battled the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) Cardinals to a 0-0 draw Sunday at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
The Vaqueros (4-10-2, 0-6-2 SLC) were led defensively by junior goalkeeper
Veronica Pacione, who recorded four saves in 90 minutes to earn a shutout and keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard.
The Cardinals (8-6-3, 5-2-1) applied offensive pressure throughout the match, recording 19 shots, including four on goal, while UTRGV finished with seven shots, including two on target.
The Vaqueros' offense was led by freshman
Anuhea Aalona and senior
Rosie Train, who each recorded two shots, including one on goal.
The Cardinals held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the Vaqueros' defense stood firm to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
UIW continued to create offensive opportunities in the second half, but Pacione and the UTRGV defense turned away the Cardinals' chances to preserve the shutout.
The Vaqueros continued to battle offensively, recording two shots in the final five minutes, but neither team was able to find the back of the net as UTRGV earned a point in SLC play.
This is the third time these two programs have tied against each other, last draw was a 1-1 draw back in the 2021 season, in Edinburg, Texas.
