OREM, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team fell at No. 24 Utah Valley University (UVU) 1-0 on Saturday at Clyde Field.
It was UTRGV's (3-6-2, 1-2-1 WAC) ninth match to be decided by one goal or less.
UTRGV held UVU (9-3-0, 2-1-0 WAC) without a shot for the first 42 minutes of the match while getting off two shots of its own. After UVU recorded three shots over the closing minutes of the first half, however, UVU continued to apply the pressure, scoring on its ninth shot when
Karson Payton took a pass from
Paul Hoffmeister at the top of the box and fired into the right side of the net at 64:28.
That was it against freshman
Esa Aalto (2-2-1), who made three saves.
Mitch Jensen (2-0-0) recorded two saves for the shutout.
UVU outshot UTRGV 12-6, including 4-2 on goal.
Freshman
Ilias Kosmidis attempted a team-high three shots (two on goal).
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3:30 p.m. when it visits Houston Baptist.
