EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team opened up Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with a 2-1 double overtime loss to UMKC on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

UTRGV (8-3-1, 0-1-0 WAC) got on the board in the 14th minute when senior Elisa Espino sent a cross from the left to the right side of the box and senior Frida Farstad-Eriksson dove forward to head the ball past Anna Lillig (2-7-2).

That was it against Lillig, who made five saves.

UTRGV held its lead until the 62nd minute, when Reighan Childers sent a free kick into a scrum in the box, setting up a deflection by Kara Priest to tie the match at 1.

UMKC (4-7-2, 1-0-0 WAC) won the match with 2:44 remaining in the second overtime when Childers bent a corner kick past freshman Kinga Szemik (4-2-0).

Szemik finished with a career-high seven saves.

UMKC outshot UTRGV 17-15, including 9-6 on goal.

UTRGV is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it visits Chicago State.
