EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team opened up Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with a 2-1 double overtime loss to UMKC on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (8-3-1, 0-1-0 WAC) got on the board in the 14
th minute when senior
Elisa Espino sent a cross from the left to the right side of the box and senior
Frida Farstad-Eriksson dove forward to head the ball past
Anna Lillig (2-7-2).
That was it against Lillig, who made five saves.
UTRGV held its lead until the 62
nd minute, when
Reighan Childers sent a free kick into a scrum in the box, setting up a deflection by
Kara Priest to tie the match at 1.
UMKC (4-7-2, 1-0-0 WAC) won the match with 2:44 remaining in the second overtime when Childers bent a corner kick past freshman
Kinga Szemik (4-2-0).
Szemik finished with a career-high seven saves.
UMKC outshot UTRGV 17-15, including 9-6 on goal.
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it visits Chicago State.
