Bonney Makes More History as Women's Soccer Blows Out Chicago State

CHICAGO, Ill. – Freshman Sarah Bonney recorded six points on two goals and two assists to break the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer NCAA Division I program records for points and goals in a season during a 5-1 victory over Chicago State University (CSU) on Sunday at Kroc Stadium.

UTRGV (9-3-1, 1-1-0 WAC) is now in the midst of its winningest season at the NCAA DI level and has assured itself of at least a .500 record. This was third time in five matches that UTRGV has scored at least five goals in a match.

Bonney now has 24 points on 10 goals and four assists. The previous records were 22 points and nine goals, set by junior Andreya Barrera in 2014. Bonney is now tied for the single-seasons assists mark as well.

Bonney's first assist allowed Barrera to score the game-winning goal at 5:33.

Bonney then scored twice in 16 seconds in the 12th minute, first on a rebound after an initial shot by junior Marcela Ramirez, and then on a pass from the right side by junior Hanna Spets, to make it 3-0.

Barrera scored again on another assist from Bonney at 18:14, marking Barrera's second-career multi-goal match.

Sophomore Sharyland alum Daniela Cantu added her second goal of the season on sophomore Kelzy Jepsen's second assist to cap the scoring at 58:07.

Freshman Kinga Szemik (5-2-0) played a scoreless first half before junior Harlingen South alum Erica Gonzalez made three saves in the second half, allowing just a goal on a header by Amber Jones off a pass from the right corner by Taylor Rankin with one second left.

CSU (1-11-0, 0-2-0 WAC) goalkeeper Audra Wisehart (0-4-0) made 10 saves.

UTRGV outshot CSU 24-6, including 16-5 on goal.

UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Utah Valley for BelieVe in a Cure at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. UTRGV is selling pink t-shirts before the match for $10 each with all proceeds benefiting cancer research. Gates open at 6.
