Goff Becomes Women's Basketball's All-Time Leading Scorer in Preseason WNIT Loss at Abilene Christian

ABILENE – Senior Shawnte' Goff scored 13 points to become The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball program's all-time leading scorer in a 70-54 loss to Abilene Christian University (ACU) to close out the Preseason WNIT on Saturday at Moody Coliseum.

Goff broke the record with a long two-point jumper from the top of the key that put UTRGV (1-2) up 10-8 with 5:19 remaining in the first quarter. Goff now has 1,451-career points, passing Bianca Torre, who scored 1,439 points from 2009-13.

Goff now holds three program records, including free throws made (286) and field goals attempted (1,399)

Sydney Shelstead led ACU (2-1) with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Sara Williamson scored 16 points with seven rebounds and five assists.

Neither team led by more than one possession until ACU scored four-straight points to go up 27-22 on a pair of Sheldstead free throws with 4:22 remaining in the second quarter.

After a three by sophomore Bernesha Peters, UTRGV tied the game on a jumper by senior Lile Havili. A pair of Breanna Wright free throws and a McKenzie Martin three, however, allowed ACU to push its lead back to five.

UTRGV pulled within 32-31 on a jumper by freshman Megan Johnson before halftime, but Williamson hit two layups, a three and a free throw to power a 13-0 run to give ACU a 45-31 lead midway through the third quarter.

ACU pushed its lead to 16 at 55-39 on a pair of Williams free throws, but sophomore Tristan Murphy made three free throws and Goff hit a three to bring UTRGV within 10 at the end of the third.

Goff started the fourth quarter with a free throw and then sophomore Nichelle Hyman buried a three and senior Mary Savoy made a layup to cap the 12-0 run with the score 55-51 at the 5:46 mark.

Williamson and Shelstead followed with layups, however, to spark a 15-0 run as ACU pushed the game out of reach.

UTRGV wraps up the road trip on Monday at 6:30 p.m. when it visits Sam Houston State.
