KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The sixth-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team fell to host and third-seeded UMKC 4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday at Durwood Stadium.
 
UTRGV (10-8-1) scored in the 79
th minute when junior 
Marcela Ramirez used a header off a corner kick by sophomore 
Diandra Aliaga.
 
UTRGV's defensive highlight of the match came in the 14
th minute. 
Kelsey Mothershead slipped between two defenders and then got past freshman goalkeeper 
Kinga Szemik (6-7-0), who had come out to contest the play, on the left. When Mothershead shot at what appeared to be an open goal, however, freshman 
Diana Ansah came streaking in to stop the ball with her feet right in front of the net, giving Szemik a chance to recover and smother the ball.
 
UMKC (7-9-4) scored the game-winner a minute and a half later on a penalty kick by 
Niekie Pellens.
 
That's where the score stayed until the 51
st minute, when 
Lilly Cobb curled a shot into the right corner of the goal. Just over six minutes after that, 
Kara Preist scored on an assist by 
Reighan Childers.
 
Lexie Howard scored on a sliding kick after a feed by 
Ryann Burnett in the 72
nd minute to complete the scoring.
 
Anna Lillig (5-9-4) made nine saves for UMKC, as UTRGV shot UMKC 10-5 on goal despite being outshot 16-13 overall.
