HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to the University of Houston 83-58 on Saturday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Sophomore
Antonio Green led UTRGV (5-9) with 11 points while going 3-for-7 from behind the arc. Green now has an NCAA-leading 59 three-pointers this season.
Damyean Dotson led Houston (8-2) with 25 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
Rob Gray scored 16 points with five rebounds and four assists.
Danrad Knowles scored 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
Armoni Brooks scored 10 points with five rebounds.
UTRGV led early in the game, going up 6-5 on a three by junior
Gage Loy three minutes into the game. Knowles responded by knocking down back-to-back baskets to spark a 21-4 run that put Houston up 26-10.
Sophomore
Walter Jones answered with a tip-in and a layup to make it a 12-point game, and then UTRGV pulled within 10 at 28-18 after a layup by junior
Nick Dixon.
UTRGV was still within 10 with 15:16 remaining in the second half after a three-point play by freshman
Xavier McDaniel Jr. that made it 46-36, but Houston scored the next nine points as part of a 21-4 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV opens up a three-game home stand on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Wayland Baptist at the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Family Night in game that will be televised regionally on Spectrum Sports channel 323. Families are encouraged to take advantage of specially priced $25 packages, which include four general admission tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas. That's a $14 savings off the regular price. Additionally, children will be able to take free holiday photos with Santa Claus from 6-to-7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6.
