PORTLAND, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to Portland State University (PSU) 87-74 on Saturday at the Stott Center.
Junior
Nick Dixon led UTRGV (2-7) with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Sophomore
Antonio Green scored 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting with four assists. Junior
Gage Loy scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
De'Sean Parsons and
Calalen Robinson lead PSU (3-3) with 20 points each.
Deontae North scored 18 points with seven rebounds while
Bryce Canda scored 14 points and
Zach Gengler scored 10.
UTRGV jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 8-3 on Dixon three-pointers and 10-4 on a layup by junior
Dan Kimasa.
PSU responded with a flurry of three-pointers, including two by North and one each from Robinson, Parsons and Canda to go on a 19-4 run and go up 23-14.
After Loy and Canda traded three-pointers, Loy hit a jumper to spark a 16-9 run to bring UTRGV within 35-33 at the half.
Loy hit a jumper to tie the game at the start of the second half, and then, after a four-point play by Canda, a Green three was the first of 10-straight points to give UTRGV a 45-39 lead.
UTRGV still led by six at 50-44 on a Dixon three and by five at 55-50 on a pair of free throws by freshman
Lesley Varner Jr. with 11:18 remaining, but PSU scored the next 11 points as part of a 31-8 run to put the game away.
UTRGV is back in action on Monday at 9 p.m. when it visits Portland.
