PORTLAND, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team closed out a seven-game road trip with a 90-89 double overtime loss to the University of Portland on Monday at Chiles Center.
It was UTRGV's first double overtime contest since Jan. 9, 2013.
Sophomore
Antonio Green led UTRGV (2-8) with 28 points on 10-of-26 shooting, including 5-of-14 from behind the arc, with seven rebounds. Junior
Nick Dixon scored 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting with nine rebounds and five assists. Junior
Gage Loy scored a career-high 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-6 from behind the arc, with four rebounds.
Alex Wintering led Portland (5-3) with 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
De'Marques Tyson hit seven three-pointers en route to 21 points.
Jazz Johnson scored 19 points with six rebounds and five assists.
Gabe Taylor scored 16 points with seven rebounds.
UTRGV jumped out to a 6-2 lead on baskets by Dixon, junior
Dan Kimasa and Green, but Portland scored the next nine points as part of a 13-3 run to go up 15-9.
Portland still led by six at 22-16 on a Wintering three-point play with 7:21 remaining in the first half. Green followed with a three and a layup to bring UTRGV within one and then hit another layup to bring UTRGV within 24-23.
UTRGV tied the game at 28 on a Dixon jumper with 4:02 left in the half before taking a 31-30 lead on a Dixon three-point play two and a half minutes later.
Green and Loy made baskets in the first minute of the second half to push UTRGV's lead to 35-30.
Portland pulled within on at 39-38 on a Tyson three, but UTRGV responded with an 11-3 run to take a 50-41 lead.
Portland followed with an 11-5 run to climb within 55-52 before Green hit back-to-back three-pointers to push UTRGV's lead back to nine.
UTRGV extended its lead to 13 at 67-54 on a dunk by junior
Adonis Rwabigwi with 6:53 remaining, but Portland went on a 19-6 run to tie the game at 73 on a
Joseph Smoyer dunk with 0.8 seconds left in regulation.
UTRGV led late in the first overtime, going up 82-80 on a Loy layup, but Johnson hit a driving layup with 6.5 seconds remaining to tie the game.
UTRGV went up 87-86 late in the second overtime before a Tyson three gave Portland the lead with 49.6 seconds left. After a timeout, Green missed a three from the top of the key, but Dixon grabbed the rebound in the lane and went to the basket for the layup to put UTRGV ahead 89-88 with 22.1 seconds to go.
Then, with time winding down, Wintering drove to the basket and missed the layup, but Taylor grabbed the rebound underneath the basket and came up with the game-winning putback with two seconds left.
UTRGV opens up a three-game home stand to kick off a stretch of six out of seven at the UTRGV Fieldhouse when it hosts Texas State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised nationally on American Sports Network and regionally on Spectrum Sports channel 323.

There will be a moment of silence before the national anthem to honor the community heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice, including all of the brave men and women that served at Pearl Harbor 75 years earlier.
