NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team fell to No. 19 Oklahoma University (OU) 92-59 on Thursday at the Lloyd Noble Center.
Junior
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir led UTRGV (5-4) with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including a career-high tying 3-of-4 from behind the arc, with eight rebounds. Senior
Shawnte' Goff finished with 12 points. Freshman
Megan Johnson scored a career-high 11 points with a career-high tying eight rebounds. Senior
Mary Savoy scored 11 points with five rebounds.
Vionise Pierre-Louis led OU (6-2) with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 10 rebounds.
Chelsea Dungee also scored 13 points, doing so on 5-of-8 shooting.
T'ona Edwards scored 12 points with six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Maddie Manning finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Nancy Mulkey scored 11 points.
After OU scored the first five points of the game, Savoy made a layup and Kjartansdóttir knocked down a three to tie the game at five. OU regained the lead at 8-5, but UTRGV tied it again, this time on a three-pointer by sophomore
Bernesha Peters.
UTRGV took its first lead at 11-10 on a Goff three with 3:15 remaining in the first quarter before a Pierre-Louis layup sparked an 8-0 run to put OU up 18-11 at the end of the quarter.
Goff hit a layup at the start of the second quarter to make it a five-point game, but an
Ijeoma Odimgbe layup kicked off an 8-0 run to give OU its largest lead at 26-13 with 6:52 left in the quarter.
OU maintained its lead for much of the quarter, but with UTRGV down 40-29 in the final minute, Johnson went 5-for-5 from the foul line to bring UTRGV within 40-34.
OU pushed its lead back to 12 on a Manning jumper that made it 47-35 early in the third quarter.
OU's lead was still in double-figures at 49-38 before Savoy, Goff and Johnson all hit baskets to bring UTRGV within 49-44 with 4:24 remaining in the third quarter.
After a timeout, however, Mulkey hit two free throws and three layups to power a 10-0 run to put OU up 59-44.
OU extended its lead to 62-46 on a
Derica Wyatt three, 67-50 on a Manning jumper at the end of the quarter, and 70-50 on a
Gabbi Ortiz three at the start of the fourth quarter to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it visits (RV) Oklahoma State.
