Men's Basketball Falls at Missouri-Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos 75-58 on Saturday at Municipal Auditorium.

Sophomore Dan Kimasa led three Vaqueros (6-19, 2-8 WAC) in double-figures scoring with 17 points and six rebounds. Freshman Antonio Green scored 12 points with three assists. Senior Everett Osborne scored 10 points with six rebounds.

Dashawn King led four 'Roos (10-16, 3-7 WAC) in double-figures scoring with 17 points and five rebounds. Kyle Steward scored 15 points. LaVell Boyd scored 14 points with five assists. Shayok Shayok scored 11 points with 12 rebounds.

The 'Roos jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the opening two minutes, but after a timeout, Osborne hit a jumper and graduate student J.J. Thompson nailed a three to make it a one-point game.

The 'Roos pushed their lead out to seven at 16-9 on a Steward layup, but Green hit back-to-back threes to make it a one-point game again.

The Vaqueros took their first lead at 19-18 on an Osborne jumper midway through the first half. Then, after a King three put the 'Roos back on top, a Kimasa layup tied the game before a free throw by senior Shaquille Hines put the Vaqueros up 22-21.

The 'Roos scored the next six points as part of a 27-8 run to take a 48-30 lead in the opening minutes of the second half.

The Vaqueros responded with a 14-5 run to pull within 53-44 on a layup by sophomore Adonis Rwabigwi with nine minutes remaining, but that's as close as they got.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Seattle U in a game that will be televised lived throughout the state of Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (323). It's the fifth annual Challenge of the Deans, when Deans from different colleges across campus, along with students from their colleges, compete in a free throw shooting competition at halftime. It's also faculty and staff appreciation night. All UTRGV faculty and staff will receive free admission and popcorn with a valid UTRGV ID. Additionally, one lucky fan in attendance will win a Nikon Cool Pix L610 digital camera. Doors open at 6.
