SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team opened their first of two matches with a 2-4 loss to the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Saturday at the UIW Tennis Courts.
 
The Cardinals (3-5) opened doubles competition with a pair of wins on courts one and two to take the point and the early lead.
 
In singles, the Vaqueros (3-5) came away with a pair of victories as freshman Yehonatan Kaufman came away with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Joey Vatanadilok on court two.
 
On court six, sophomore Elliot Johnstone dropped his first set to Ryan Hoverson 4-6 but rallied back to win 6-0 in the second to force a tiebreaking set. Johnstone came away with the 6-2 victory in the final set for the Vaqueros second point of the match.
 
The Cardinals went on to win on courts one, four and five to clinch the match. The match on court three between sophomore Koby Jansen and Francisco Bendana went unfinished.
 
The Vaqueros will wrap up Saturday's doubleheader as they face Our Lady of the Lake at the OLLU Tennis Courts.
