EDINBURG – Senior
Scott Mercer capped a three-run rally with a walk-off single to send the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team to a 7-6 victory over the Prairie View A&M University Panthers during day two of the Al Ogletree Classic on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Freshman
Caden Rosholt singled with one out in the ninth, leading the Panthers (2-3) to bring in
Darrien Williams (1-1) from the bullpen. Williams plunked junior
Joseph Collazo and allowed a single to junior
Jose Garcia to load the bases. One out later, junior
Jacob Huckabay drew a seven-pitch walk to force-in a run. That brought up Mercer, who turned on a 2-1 pitch and sent it up the middle and into centerfield to end the game.
Mercer finished 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBI. He drove-in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly in the first and gave the Vaqueros (2-4) a 4-3 lead with a suicide squeeze in the sixth.
Garcia went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Garcia gave the Vaqueros a 2-0 lead with a single in the second and tied the game at 3 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Collazo finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Senior
Parker Gallegos (1-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Nick Gurka led the Panthers by going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Vaqueros continue the Al Ogletree Classic on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they play host to Houston Baptist. It's the second game of a doubleheader, as Washington State faces Prairie View A&M at 3. Gates open at 2.
