Men's Basketball Falls to Grand Canyon

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 64-58 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Senior Everett Osborne led four Vaqueros (6-18, 2-7 WAC) in double-figure scoring with a career-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Graduate student Dakota Slaughter scored 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Senior Shaquille Hines scored 12 points with five rebounds and six assists. Sophomore Dan Kimasa scored 10 points with 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
 
Joshua Braun led the 'Lopes (20-4, 7-2 WAC) with 20 points and six rebounds. Grandy Glaze scored 18 points with 13 rebounds. Keonta Vernon scored 15 points with seven rebounds.
 
The 'Lopes jumped out to a 7-2 lead over the first three and a half minutes, but the Vaqueros outscored the 'Lopes 34-10 over the next 14 and a half minutes to build a 36-17 lead.
 
The Vaqueros hit six three-pointers during the run, including three by Slaughter, who had 10 points during the run, and two by Osborne. The Vaqueros went 13-for-24 during the run while holding the 'Lopes to 2-of-14 shooting.
 
The Vaqueros led 39-21 after another Osborne three with 1:13 left in the first half, but the 'Lopes respnded with a 14-0 run to pull within 39-35 on a Glaze layup at the 14:41 mark of the second half.
 
The Vaqueros pushed their lead back out to seven at 46-39 on an Osborne three-point play, but Braun hit a pair of three-pointers to power a 12-0 run as the 'Lopes took a 51-46 lead.
 
The Vaqueros came back to tie the game at 51 on a Hines three-point play, and again at 53 on a Kimasa layup, but the 'Lopes scored the next six points as part of an 11-5 run to close the game.
 
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. when they visit Missouri-Kansas City.
