Box ScoreEDINBURG – University of Texas Rio Grande Valley sophomores
Johnny Gonzalez and
Robert Quinonez combined on a four-hit shutout to lead the Vaqueros baseball team past the Arlington Baptist College Patriots 5-0 on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Field.
Gonzalez (2-1) went six innings while allowing just three hits and striking out six for his second win of the season. Quinonez pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the season after allowing just one hit and striking out four.
The scoring got started in the bottom of the first when senior
Cole Loncar hit an RBI triple to left center field that allowed
Jose Garcia to come in and score giving the Vaqueros (5-8) the 1-0 lead.
Garcia hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the third and then came in to score on a sacrifice fly by
Victor Garcia Jr. that pushed UTRGV's lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Manny Loredo kept things going in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out RBI double to deep center field that allowed senior
Scott Mercer, who reached on a walk, to score from first making it 3-0.
In the top of the fifth, junior
Joseph Collazo led off with a solo home run, his second of the season, that extended the Vaqueros lead to 4-0. Loredo, who finished the night 3-for-3, made it 5-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to wrap up the scoring.
The Vaqueros and Patriots will play the middle game of the series on Saturday at 6 p.m.
