EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball dropped the second game of a doubleheader to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 9-2 on Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
 
The Vaqueros (7-10) took the lead in the first when junior Jacob Huckabay singled home junior Joseph Collazo to make it 1-0.
 
That was it against Islanders (7-8) starter Chris Cooper (1-1), who allowed five hits and one walk while striking out three.
 
The Vaqueros got back on the board in the seventh against Dalton D'Spain when sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Manny Loredo doubled and, two batters later, junior Jose Garcia followed with an RBI-single to bring the Vaqueros within 8-2.
 
Freshman Pablo Ortiz (1-2) retired 10 of the first 12 batters he faced, but four of the next five singled, including RBI-hits with two outs in the fourth by Austin Krajnak and Brett Burner to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead.
 
Then, with two outs in the sixth, the Islanders loaded the bases to set-up a two-run single by Casey Thomas, a two-run triple by Zack Gibson, and an RBI-single by Zacarias Hardy, to make it 7-1.
 
The Islanders scratched across one more run in the eighth when Gibson tripled and scored on a two-out error.
 
The Vaqueros open up a two-game series against Jackson State on Friday at 7 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in a game that will be televised live throughout the state of Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (323). The first 150 fans in attendance will receive a green koozie. Gates open at 6.
