Baseball Scores Early and Often in Win Over Jackson State

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team scored nine runs over the first four innings en route to a 10-4 victory over the Jackson State University Tigers on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
 
The Vaqueros (8-10) scored three runs in the first, two in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and one in the sixth.
 
Junior Joseph Collazo led the Vaqueros offensively by going 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and one run scored. The double accounted for the first run of the game.
 
Junior Jacob Huckabay also drove-in two runs, including an RBI-single in the first and a bases loaded walk in the second.
 
Junior Jose Garcia reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored. His RBI came on a single that gave the Vaqueros a 10-0 lead in the sixth.
 
Sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Manny Loredo and freshman Caden Rosholt each went 2-for-4. Loredo added a walk, two runs scored and an RBI while Rosholt scored once.
 
Sophomore Johnny Gonzalez (3-1) made the runs stand up, racking up a career-high tying eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings of five-hit ball. After allowing three hits to the first eight batters, Gonzalez retired seven in a row
 
Bryce Williams led the Tigers (9-8) by going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, including the sacrifice fly that extended the game in the seventh.
 
The Tigers added three runs in the ninth.
 
Jamal Wilson (1-1) started for the Tigers, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks.
 
The Vaqueros conclude this two-game series against Jackson State on Saturday at 6 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in a game that will be televised live throughout the state of Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel Alternate (825). It's kids day, as fans ages 17 and under will receive free admission and frozen treats. The first 50 fans ages 17 and under in attendance will receive free t-shirts. Additionally, any fans bringing four non-perishable food items to the game will receive a free ticket as part of the Strike Out Hunger Promotion. All donations benefit the Food Bank RGV. There is no limit on how many tickets can be redeemed. Gates open at 5.
