EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team scored seven runs in the second inning to complete the season sweep of the Jackson State University Tigers with an 11-4 victory on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Senior
Scott Mercer led off the inning with a seven-pitch walk and then senior
Correy Davis singled. One out later, sophomore McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo grounded out to score Mercer and tie the game. The next six batters hit singles, with freshman
Caden Rosholt and juniors
Jose Garcia and
Joseph Collazo each driving in runs and junior
Jacob Huckabay driving in two. The final run scored on an error to give the Vaqueros (9-10) a 7-1 lead and knock out Tigers (9-9) starter
Jevon Jones (0-2).
Senior
Cole Loncar finished a season-best 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Garcia, Huckabay and Mercer all finished 2-for-4. Huckabay had a double, two RBI and one run scored. Garcia and Mercer each scored twice with Garcia adding an RBI. Mercer also doubled and walked.
That was more than enough run support for junior
Andrew Garcia (3-1), who struck out four while allowing two runs on six hits and one walk in six innings.
Cornelius Copeland led the Tigers offensively, going 3-for-3 with a double.
Bryce Williams finished 2-for-4 with RBI-singles in the second and sixth innings.
The Vaqueros conclude this eight-game home stand on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when they host Texas State at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in a game that will be televised live throughout the state of Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (323). It's $2 Tuesday, featuring $2 general admission tickets and concession items for $2 or less. Gates open at 5.
