Women's Tennis Rallies to Defeat Missouri-Kansas City

PHOENIX – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis team rallied after dropping the doubles point to defeat the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos 5-2 on Sunday at Paseo Tennis Center.

"UMKC came out and played aggressive in doubles," Vaqueros head coach Stephanie Wooten-Quijada said. "They had a lot of energy and took the doubles point quickly at the start of the match. We bounced back in singles and battled on all courts. We kept our compsure throughout the course of singles and won the big points."

The Vaqueros (5-5) won on doubles court two as the team of senior Reegan Greenwood and freshman Tara Donaho beat Raquel Argenal and Allie Schulte 7-5 but the Kangaroos (5-10) won on courts one and three to clinch the point.

In singles, Greenwood kicked off the rally with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Dimitra Stavrianakou on court one to even the match at one apiece. With the win, Greenwood now moves into sole possession of sixth place on the program's all-time career singles wins list with 48 and needs two more to get to the fifth place, which is held by Tania Webster (1988-91).

Donaho then gave the Vaqueros the lead with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Schulte on court six and then it was sophomore Natacha Minc who defeated Argenal 6-2, 7-5 on court four.

After the Kangaroos won on court three, freshman Doris Aleksovska fell behind in her match against Linda Ammar Mouhoub as she fell 4-6 in the first set. Aleksovska then won 6-1 one in the second and 6-4 in the third to clinch the victory for the Vaqueros.

Sophomore Dominique Esparza wrapped up the scoring on court two. She opened her match against Melinda Johnson with a 6-4 win in the first set. After dropping the second set, Esparza found herself trailing 0-3 in the third but bounced back to win 6-4 to close out the match.

The Vaqueros will be back in action on March 25 when they face Central Arkansas in a neutral site match in Austin.
