EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the New Mexico State University Aggies 12-3 in the middle game of a three-game series on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Senior
Correy Davis led the Vaqueros (11-12, 1-1 WAC) by posting his first multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk. His second single drove-in the Vaqueros' final run in the eighth.
Junior
Victor Garcia Jr. also reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch.
Junior
Andrew Garcia (3-2) pitched well, holding the Aggies (16-11, 4-1 WAC) to one run over the first five innings. In the sixth, however,
Greg Popylisen and
Austin Botello drew leadoff walks to knock out Garcia and
Dan Hetzel reached on an infield-single to load the bases.
Joseph Koerper grounded out to force-in a run, and then, with two outs,
Trey Stine hit a two-run double and
Mason Fishback came up with an RBI-single to cap a four run inning and give the Aggies a 5-2 lead.
The Aggies added three runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth to put the game away.
Kyle Bradish (4-2) pitched seven innings for the Aggies, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out eight.
The Vaqueros pushed across their first run in the third on a throwing error before scoring on a double steal in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
The Vaqueros and Aggies complete this three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast live throughout Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (323). Any fans bringing four non-perishable food items to the game will receive a free ticket as part of the Strike Out Hunger Promotion. All donations benefit the Food Bank RGV. Gates open at 11 a.m.
