EDINBURG – University of Texas Rio Grande Valley sophomore pitcher
Johnny Gonzalez tossed his first complete game of his career to lead the Vaqueros past the Sacramento State Hornets 3-2 on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Field.
Gonzalez (5-2) struck out a career-high 11 batters as he allowed just two runs while scattering 10 hits. Junior
Victor Garcia Jr. and senior
Jacob Huckabay finished the night with a pair of hits each.
The Hornets (22-15, 10-3 WAC) got on the board in the bottom of the second. After
Kody Reynolds hit a one-out double, he came in to score on an RBI single by Trent Goodrich.
The Vaqueros (18-16, 7-3 WAC) got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as they knocked out Sacramento State's starter
Sam Long, after he issued walks to junior
Austin Oakes and Garcia Jr. A passed ball allowed freshman
Mike Garza, who pinch ran for Oakes, to move to third but an errant throw by
Gunner Pollman allowed him to score to tie the game at one.
In the bottom of the eighth, junior
Joseph Collazo reached on a one-out single and then one-out later he came around to score on an RBI double by senior
Correy Davis. Huckabay followed with an RBI single to right that drove in Davis from second to push the lead to 3-1.
The Hornets made it interesting in the top of the ninth as they loaded the bases with two outs.
Bronson Grubbs drove in Goodrich from third but the Hornets sent pinch runner
Austin Root from third but was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
The Vaqueros and Hornets will close out the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Saturday is also Family Day where parents in attendance with their children, who must be current UTRGV students, will receive general admission tickets at the discounted rate of $5.
