EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros dropped the first game of the doubleheader to the Sacramento State Hornets 12-3 on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
The Hornets (23-15, 11-3 WAC) grabbed the early lead after a fielding error allowed
Andrew McWilliam to score from first. The Vaqueros (18-17, 7-4 WAC) answered back in the bottom of the first with a two-run single from junior
Victor Garcia Jr., which made it 2-1 UTRGV.
Sacramento State regained the lead in the top of the second as they batted around against UTRGV starter
Andrew Garcia (6-3) scoring five runs on five hits and then added two more in the top of the fourth to push their lead to 8-2.
That would be enough for
Max Karnos as he improved to 4-2 on the season after pitching seven innings while allowing just one earned run, which was a solo home run by senior
Jacob Huckabay in the bottom of the seventh.
Huckabay finished 3-for-3 with a walk to highlight the Vaqueros' offense.
The Hornets added three runs in the top of the seventh and one more in the bottom of the ninth to round out the scoring.
The Vaqueros and Hornets will wrap up the series with the second game of the doubleheader starting approximately at 6:05 p.m.
