Baseball Falls to Sacramento State in Longest Game in WAC History

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell 5-3 to the Sacramento State Hornets in 15 innings, which is the longest game in Western Athletic Conference history, on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

The Vaqueros (18-18, 7-5 WAC) trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the 13th when the game was suspended on Saturday night due to heavy rains. When play resumed on Sunday afternoon, junior Austin Oakes delivered an RBI-single that drove in junior Austin Douglas to tie the game at three.

Sacramento State got the go-ahead runs in the top of the 15th on an error and an RBI-single by Gunner Pollman before Tanner Olsen closed out the game with a scoreless bottom of the 15th.

The 15-innings played also ties for the third longest game in program history. The longest game in program history was 19 innings long against Stephen F. Austin in 1990.

Olsen (3-3) earned the victory after pitching three scoreless innings while junior George Lamb (0-2) took the loss after allowing two unearned runs.

The Hornets got the scoring started with two of their runs in the top of the second inning after Dan Deely hit a two-run single.

Oakes got UTRGV on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI-single that scored senior Jacob Huckabay. Oakes then drove in senior Cole Loncar in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI-single that tied the game at two as he finished the ball game 5-for-7 with three RBI.

The Hornets got their third run of the game in the top of the 13th with an RBI-single by Vinny Esposito.

Sophomore Robert Quinonez, who started the game, pitched the first 10 innings and allowed just two runs with a career-high 10 strikeouts as he took a no-decision.

The Vaqueros will be back in action on April 29 when they open a three-game series against the Seattle U Redhawks.
