EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell 5-3 to the Sacramento State Hornets in 15 innings, which is the longest game in Western Athletic Conference history, on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
The Vaqueros (18-18, 7-5 WAC) trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the 13
th when the game was suspended on Saturday night due to heavy rains. When play resumed on Sunday afternoon, junior
Austin Oakes delivered an RBI-single that drove in junior
Austin Douglas to tie the game at three.
Sacramento State got the go-ahead runs in the top of the 15
th on an error and an RBI-single by
Gunner Pollman before
Tanner Olsen closed out the game with a scoreless bottom of the 15
th.
The 15-innings played also ties for the third longest game in program history. The longest game in program history was 19 innings long against Stephen F. Austin in 1990.
Olsen (3-3) earned the victory after pitching three scoreless innings while junior
George Lamb (0-2) took the loss after allowing two unearned runs.
The Hornets got the scoring started with two of their runs in the top of the second inning after
Dan Deely hit a two-run single.
Oakes got UTRGV on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI-single that scored senior
Jacob Huckabay. Oakes then drove in senior
Cole Loncar in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI-single that tied the game at two as he finished the ball game 5-for-7 with three RBI.
The Hornets got their third run of the game in the top of the 13
th with an RBI-single by
Vinny Esposito.
Sophomore
Robert Quinonez, who started the game, pitched the first 10 innings and allowed just two runs with a career-high 10 strikeouts as he took a no-decision.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on April 29 when they open a three-game series against the Seattle U Redhawks.
