EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team continued to develop their strong defensive chemistry in a 1-1 tie with the RGV FC Toros on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Christian Lucatero gave the Toros a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. He beat his defender into the box, juked the attack right, and then chipped the ball over a charging Jorge Medina into the back of the net.
That was it against Medina, who finished with seven saves, including five in the second half.
The Vaqueros tied the match with 30 seconds remaining in the first half. Freshman Raul Fierro centered a hard shot deflection and quickly drilled it into the left corner of the net before the Toros keeper could get back to his feet.
The Vaqueros close out the spring season on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they when they head to St. Mary's for a friendly, followed immediately by another friendly against Our Lady of the Lake.
