EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team beat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 3-0 in a friendly on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Freshman
Daniela Cantu and sophomore
Hanna Spets scored goals in the first half to give the Vaqueros a 2-0 lead.
The Islanders best chance to score came late in the second half, but after the shot hit off the cross bar and bounced straight down, freshman
Arnelle Gonzalez cleared it.
Moments later, the Vaqueros went on the attack. Freshman
Daniela Cantu came streaking up the left sideline, waited out two defenders at the top of the box, and then fired top shelf to make it 3-0.
Sophomore
Allyson Smith had a strong game controlling the midfield, helping to limit the Islanders' offensive opportunities.
Junior
Maria Eriksen made two saves for the shutout.
The Vaqueros close out the spring season on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they visit Our Lady of the Lake.
