Baseball Drops Middle Game at Seattle U

BELLEVUE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team dropped the middle game of a three-game series to the Seattle University Redhawks 5-3 on Saturday at Bannerwood Park.

Senior Cole Loncar led the Vaqueros (18-20, 7-7 WAC) offensively by going a season-best 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Vaqueros took the lead in the second on an RBI-double by junior Victor Garcia Jr., and then extended their lead to 2-0 on an RBI-single by senior Scott Mercer in the third.

The Redhawks (27-15, 14-3 WAC) tied the game in the fifth on a two-run single by Griffin Andreychuk.

The Vaqueros jumped back on top on a two-out single by Loncar against Grant Gunning (2-1) in the seventh, but in the bottom of the inning, Andreychuk hit a two-run home run off of sophomore Harlingen South alum Zach Martinez (0-2) to give the Redhawks the lead for good.

Andreychuk finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored, accounting for half of the Redhawks' hits. The Vaqueros finished with 10 hits, including two by Mercer.

The Redhawks added an insurance run on a Jeffrey Morgan RBI-fielder's choice with two outs in the eighth.

Zach Wolf worked out of a bases loaded one-out jam for his eighth save.

The Vaqueros and Redhawks conclude this three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
