BROWNSVILLE – The No. 2 University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis team will look to be crowned Western Athletic Conference champions as they face off against the No. 1 New Mexico State Aggies on Sunday at the Brownsville Tennis Center at 9 a.m.
Last Time Out
The Vaqueros defeated the UMKC Kangaroos 4-1 to punch their ticket in the WAC Tournament championship match on Saturday.
They got rolling in doubles as the team of
Doris Aleksovska and
Dominique Ibarra defeated Marina Albert and Linda Ammar Mouhoub 6-1 on court three.
Dominique Ibarra and
Natacha Minc then clinched the point with a 6-4 win on court two to put UTRGV up 1-0.
As singles got underway both teams had to endure a three hour and fifty minute rain delay before getting the rest of the match finished.
In singles, Aleksovska gave the Vaqueros another point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Mouhoub on court five and then it was
Tara Donaho who came away with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory over Allie Schulte on court six.
Reegan Greenwood picked up a 6-3 victory in the first set over Dimitra Stavrianakou on court one. In the second set, Greenwood found herself down 4-5 but rallied for the 7-5 win to pull out the victory to clinch the match for the Vaqueros.
Scouting the Aggies
The Aggies are coming off of a 4-0 win over Seattle U to clinch a spot in the championship match.
They are 11-9 on the season and finished a perfect 5-0 in conference play in the regular season.
The Aggies have four with nine singles victories in Ash Shrivastav, Rimpledeep Kaur, Chloe Jolliff and Lindsay Harlas. Mia Brandt and Erika Castillas have added eight singles victories.
In doubles, Harlas and Jollif lead the way with a 12-6 record while Kaur and Shrivastav have posted a 10-7 record while mainly playing at the No. 2 spot.
The All-Time Series
The Vaqueros are 1-5 against the Aggies all-time in a series that dates back to 2008. Last season, these two teams faced each other in Phoenix where the Aggies came away with the 5-2 win.
The only win the Vaqueros have against the Aggies came on March 22, 2008 when they picked up the 5-2 win at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
These two teams met this season and it was the Aggies who came away with the 4-3 victory back on March 18 in Phoenix.

Senior
Reegan Greenwood is currently fourth in program history with 54 career singles wins. She is now one win behind Barbara Barrera (1988-90) for third place all-time. Ellen Nelissen (1991-95) tops the all-time list with 67 wins.
