BROWNSVILLE – The No. 2 University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis team punched their ticket to the championship match of the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament with a 4-1 victory over the No. 3 University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos on Saturday at the Brownsville Tennis Center.
 
"It is really exciting to get that win," Vaqueros head coach Stephanie Wooten-Quijada said. "I had high anxiety all week especially knowing that we were going to play UMKC in the first round because they are a tough team and fight until the very end. It was really tight and could have gone either way. I am very proud of my girls for competing."
 
The Vaqueros got rolling in doubles as the team of freshmen Doris Aleksovska and Dominique Ibarra defeated Marina Albert and Linda Ammar Mouhoub 6-1 on court three. Sophomores Dominique Ibarra and Natacha Minc then clinched the point with a 6-4 win on court two to put UTRGV up 1-0.
 
As singles got underway both teams had to endure a three hour and fifty minute rain delay before getting the rest of the match finished.
 
In singles, Aleksovska gave the Vaqueros another point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Mouhoub on court five and then it was the WAC Freshman of the Year Tara Donaho who came away with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory over Allie Schulte on court six.
 
Senior Reegan Greenwood picked up a 6-3 victory in the first set over Dimitra Stavrianakou on court one. In the second set, Greenwood found herself down 4-5 but rallied for the 7-5 win to pull out the victory to clinch the match for the Vaqueros.
 
The Vaqueros will face the New Mexico State Aggies for the WAC Championship on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Brownsville Tennis Center.
