Garcia Tosses Three-Hitter to Lead Baseball Past Chicago State

CHICAGO, Ill. – Junior Andrew Garcia pitched a three-hitter to lead the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team past the Chicago State University Cougars 7-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Cougar Stadium.

Garcia (5-2) carried a no-hitter into the fifth, issuing just three walks along the way. With two outs in the fifth, however, David Wright singled to centerfield.

Garcia only allowed two base runners after the fifth, the last of which came in the eighth when Cody Grosse tripled and scored on a Thomas sacrifice fly.

In his second complete game of the season, Garcia struck out a career-high tying six while throwing 81-of-132 (61.36 percent) pitched for strikes.

The Vaqueros (13-14, 2-3 WAC) scored all the runs they needed against Cougars (7-22, 1-7 WAC) starter Justin Wyant (1-7) in the first. With second and third and one out, Correy Davis hit a two-run single and advanced to second on the throw. Davis moved to third on a single by junior Austin Oakes before scoring on a sacrifice fly by junior Victor Garcia Jr. to make it 3-0.

The Vaqueros added four more runs in the fifth on an error, a two-run double by sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Manny Loredo and an RBI-single by sophomore Isaac Gonzalez.
