OREM, Utah – In its highest scoring game in over a year, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 16-11 on Friday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
It was the program's highest scoring game since May 10, 2015, a 15-13 win at New Mexico State.
Senior
Cole Loncar led the Vaqueros (19-25, 8-11 WAC) offensively by going a career-high tying 5-for-6 with a double, a season-high three RBI and one run scored. Junior
Jose Garcia went a career-high tying 4-for-6 with a double, a career-high tying two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo went 2-for-4 with a walk and a career-high three runs scored. Junior
Joseph Collazo went 2-for-6 with an RBI.
Mark Krueger led the Wolverines (29-20, 14-8 WAC) by going 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, four RBI and three runs scored.
Stone Ramsey went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Greyson Bogden went 2-for-6 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
Spencer Gothberg went 2-for-3 with two walks, three RBI and one run scored.
The Vaqueros got on the board in the second against
Danny Beddes (7-3) when sophomore
Victor Garcia Jr. homered to left field. Then, after a walk and a single,
Jose Garcia hit a two-run double to make it 3-0.
The Wolverines got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Nikki Rowe alum
Ryan Jackson (3-4) threw a wild pitch to score
Justin Erlandson.
The Wolverines took the lead in the third when Bogden hit a two-out single, and then, with the bases loaded, Krueger hit a two-run double to make it 4-3.
In the fourth, the Vaqueros tied the game on a groundout by freshman
Anthony Gomez and then took the lead on a two-out double by Loncar.
In the bottom of the inning, however, Bogden hit a two-run double and Kruger and Gothberg hit two-run singles to put the Wolverines up 10-5.
In the sixth, the Vaqueros loaded the bases with nobody out, setting up a Loncar RBI-single to make it 10-6.
The Wolverines pushed their lead out to six in the bottom of the inning on RBI-singles by Gothberg and Ramsey.
In the eighth, the Vaqueros pulled within 12-10 on a Loncar RBI-single, a groundout by Collazo and a two-run double by junior
Austin Oakes.
Ramsey and
Zac Willis hit two-run singles in the bottom of the inning, however, to extend the Wolverines' lead back out to six.
The Vaqueros loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and got one run back on a single by senior
Correy Davis, but that's as close as they got.
The Vaqueros and Wolverines play the middle game of this three-game series on Saturday at 7 p.m.
