OREM, Utah – In its third extra-inning game of the season, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 3-2 in 13 innings on Saturday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
Senior
Parker Gallegos started for the Vaqueros (19-26, 8-12 WAC), racking up a career-high seven strikeouts in a career-high tying seven innings during his first start of the season. Gallegos allowed just six hits and one walk while holding the Wolverines 1-for-10 with runners on base.
Junior
Jose Garcia led the Vaqueros offensively, going 3-for-6 with an RBI and finishing a home run short of the cycle. Freshman
Anthony Gomez went a career-best 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
The Wolverines (30-20, 15-8 WAC) won the game in the 13
th when
Craig Brinkerhof reached on a two-base error, and then, one out later,
Spencer Gothberg singled to center off of sophomore Harlingen South alum
Zach Martinez (0-4).
Martinez pitched three innings, striking out one while allowing three hits and two walks.
That made a winner of
Matt Davidson (2-0), who pitched a scoreless 13
th.
Gothberg gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the second with a home run to left.
With one out in the third, however, the Vaqueros strung together three-straight hits against
Patrick Wolfe, including an RBI-double by Garcia. Then, after a walk loaded the bases, junior
Joseph Collazo singled to left to put the Vaqueros up 2-1.
Wolfe pitched 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out two.
That was it until the sixth, when
Zac Willis singled home
Jordan Schlehuber to tie the game.
The Vaqueros and Wolverines conclude this three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
