LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team closed out the Texas Tech Tournament with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-19) victory over Stephen F. Austin (SFA) on Saturday at United Supermarkets Arena.
UTRGV (6-4) has now taken two out of three in each of its first three tournaments.
Senior
Alisha Watson led UTRGV with 16 kills on .312 hitting and 11 digs for her third double-double of the season and second of the day. Sophomore
Ragni Steen Knudsen finished with 13 kills and eight digs. Freshman
Barbara Silva recorded 10 kills on .421 hitting and eight blocks. Junior
Tina Sekulic dished out 40 assists with eight digs.
Justice Walker led SFA (5-5) with seven kills on .467 hitting and five blocks.
KK Payne also had seven kills.
Watson recorded four quick kills to help UTRGV jump out to an 11-2 lead in the first set. After a 6-2 run brought SFA within 8-13, a Sekulic kill sparked an 11-4 run to push the set out of reach.
The second set was tight throughout, as UTRGV and SFA traded points over the first six serves. UTRGV scored four of the next five points to take a 7-4 lead on a kill by sophomore
Barbara Thais Krug. UTRGV extended its lead to four at 12-8 on a kill by sophomore
Alexandra Ecker. The lead was still four at 14-10 after a Knudsen kill, but SFA scored five of the next six points to tie the set at 15. SFA took its first lead at 20-19 on a
Peyton Redmond kill, but three Kundsen kills and two Watson kills fueled a 6-3 run to end the set.
The third set was tight early, with SFA leading 8-7 after an attack error. Kills by Silva and Watson, though, sparked a 13-5 run to give UTRGV a 20-13 lead. SFA scored the next three points to make it close, but two Silva kills and a block by Silva and Knudsen helped UTRGV pull away for the win.
UTRGV kicks off its final tournament of the regular season on Friday at 3:30 p.m. when it faces Abilene Christian at the Owls Classic, hosted by Florida Atlantic.
