FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team fell to Fort Wayne 4-3 in double overtime on Monday at Hefner Soccer Complex.
The game-winner came at 103:50 when
Will Hunt fed
Oscar Uyamadu who scored from 15 yards out. The goal came after 11 minutes of Fort Wayne (5-3-0) playing with a man advantage as senior
Sergio Cavazos picked up a red card at 92:51.
After UTRGV (2-3-1) went down 1-0 in the opening minutes on a
Jacob Murphy goal, junior
Olli Tynkkynen scored on a penalty kick to tie the match at 25:36.
Just under seven minutes later, UTRGV went on a two-on-one break, and an attempted cross in the box was deflected into the net to give UTRGV the 2-1 lead.
Fort Wayne tied the match just under 12 minutes into the second half when
Zach Tom scored on a free kick, but freshman
Jaakko Hietikko responded six minutes later after he won the ball in a scrum and fired from close-in to beat
Jorge Trujillo (4-2-0).
That's where the scored stayed until there was 10 minutes left in regulation, when Hunt shook senior goalkeeper
Leo Castillo (1-2-1) in the box and shot past him to tie the match.
Castillo and Trujillo each finished with five saves.
Fort Wayne outshot UTRGV 20-15 and shots on goal were tied at 9 apiece.
UTRGV returns home on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Our Lady of the Lake for
Family Health and Fitness Day. Gates open at 6.
