EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team opened up Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with a 2-0 loss to UMKC on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex in front of a crowd of 1,018.
UTRGV (2-5-1, 0-1-0 WAC) had multiple scoring opportunities, outshooting UMKC (2-5-0, 1-0-0 WAC) 18-15. One of the first opportunities came a little over five minutes in when freshman
Damian Roszczyk beat the defense but hit the post with a shot. UTRGV had two of their seven corner kicks shortly afterward and largely controlled the pace of play.
A little over 14 minutes into the second half, however,
Mirko Orchia scored off a free kick to give UMKC the lead.
Then, with about 20 minutes remaining,
Antoine Precheur passed to
Eric McWoods on the side of the goal, and McWoods sent a shot between junior
Frederik Frankman and senior
Leo Castillo (1-4-1) into the back corner of the net.
Filippo Errico (1-4-0) made six saves for the shutout.
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Grand Canyon. Gates open at 12.
