HUNTSVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis teams opened up its season with a 5-2 victory over Prairie View A&M on Saturday in a neutral site match at the McAdams Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (1-0) swept through doubles as the team of sophomore Marine Darzyan and freshman Amanda Guardia defeated Prairie View A&M's team of Stacey Lackey and Tatiana Ruhl 6-3 on court three. Junior Dominique Esparza teamed with freshman Anastasia Belyaeva to pick up a 6-4 win over Neharika Rama and Shaddae Findley to clinch the doubles point.
 
Sophomore Dominique Ibarra and freshman Chloe Leclere finished out doubles with a 7-6 (2) win over Sydney Thomas and Timara Maxwell.
 
In singles, Prairie View A&M tied the match up as they picked up a point on court six. Darzyan grabbed the lead once again for UTRGV with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Thomas on court two. Belyaeva added to the lead with a hard fought three set victory over Findley on court four. After dropping the first set 4-6, Belyaeva came back with a 6-3 victory in the second and then put the match away with a 10-2 win in the tiebreaker.
 
Esparza clinched the match for UTRGV with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Stacey Thomas on court three and then it was Chloe Leclere who put the cap on the scoring for UTRGV with a 6-2, 7-6, (4) win over Maxwell on court five.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Sunday at 11 a.m. when they face Sam Houston State at the McAdams Tennis Center.
