SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to Seattle U 96-84 on Saturday at Key Arena.
Junior
Nick Dixon led UTRGV (10-14, 2-5 WAC) with 26 points, eight rebounds and six assists. He went 7-of-13 from the field and a career-high 12-of-12 from the line. Sophomore
Antonio Green scored 22 points while hitting four three-pointers to raise his NCAA-leading total to 99. Freshman
Xavier McDaniel Jr. finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
Zachary Moore led Seattle U (10-11, 2-4 WAC) with 33 points on 11-of-14 shooting, including 8-of-10 from behind the arc, and seven rebounds.
Brendan Westendorf scored 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc, with five rebounds and six assists.
William Powell scored 22 points with seven rebounds.
Seattle U led by as many as 17, going up 50-33 on a Westendorf three late in the first half.
Seattle U's lead was 15 at 63-48 on a Westendorf layup with 15:02 remaining in the second half when sophomore
Walter Jones hit a three, Dixon made a layup and two free throws, and Green converted a three-point play to bring UTRGV within five.
Seattle U pushed its lead to 67-60 on a
Manny Chibuogwu jumper, but a Green four-point play sparked a 9-2 run that allowed UTRGV to tie the game at 69 with 9:23 to go.
Moore bookended an 8-0 run with a three-pointer and a three-point play to give Seattle U a 77-69 lead and push the game out of reach.
UTRGV led twice early on, going up 3-0 on a three by McAllen-native
Moe McDonald, and 6-3 on a three by McDaniel.
A Westendorf three and a Powell three-point play gave Seattle U the lead, but UTRGV pulled within 9-8 on a pair of Dixon free throws and 12-11 on a McDonald three.
Moore hit a pair of threes to help Seattle U build an 18-13 lead before a Green three and a Dixon layup tied the game at the 11:46 mark.
The game was still close at 31-26 after three free throws by McDaniel five minutes later, but Westendorf, Moore and Chibuogwu combined for five three-pointers to power a 19-7 run to give Seattle U its 17-point lead.
UTRGV returns home on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts UMKC in a game that will be televised regionally on Spectrum Sports Alt. channel 825. Doors open at 6.
