EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team is on a program record seven-game winning streak after a 74-39 victory over UMKC on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
UTRGV (12-6, 2-0 WAC) is now off to the best 18-game start in program history, remaining one game ahead of last year's record-setting pace that saw the team finish with a program record .576 (19-14) winning percentage.
 
Sophomore Idil Türk led UTRGV with a career-high 20 points on a career-best 5-of-6 shooting from behin the arc. Senior Mary Savoy scored 16 points with five rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Junior Shawnte' Goff scored 10 points with four rebounds and five assists.
 
Ceidra Coleman led UMKC (5-10, 0-2 WAC) with nine points.
 
The first quarter was tight, with UMKC leading 13-12 in the final minute. Türk closed out the first and opened the second quarter with three-pointers and then hit two more during an 18-0 run to put UTRGV up 30-13 with 3:41 remaining.
 
After a Coleman layup, UTRGV scored the next 10 points, going up 40-15 on a Savoy jumper early in the third quarter.
 
In total, UTRGV outscored UMKC 21-2 in the second quarter. The two points were the fewest ever by a UTRGV opponent in a single quarter.
 
UMKC pulled wtihin 44-20 midway through the third, but UTRGV outscored UMKC 26-10 over the next 14 minutes to take its largest lead at 70-30 with 2:09 to play.
 
UTRGV plays its next three on the road starting Thusrday at 9 p.m. at CSU Bakersfield.
