OREM, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team endured its first loss in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play this season, 2-1 in overtime to Utah Valley on Saturday at Clyde Field.
Utah Valley (7-10-0, 3-1-0 WAC) scored the game-winning goal in the 97
th minute when a free kick by
Libby Webber deflected off the UTRGV (7-6-3, 2-1-1 WAC) defense and right to the feet of
Breanna DeWaal, who shot the ball into the top middle of the net.
UTRGV trailed for much of the match, as Utah Valley took a 1-0 lead in the 17
th minute when
Breanna McCarter sent a cross to
Tori Smith, who found the top of the net.
The goal ended UTRGV's defensive scoreless streak at 441:32, the second longest in program history.
In the 83
rd minute, however, sophomore
Sarah Bonney scored her second goal of the season to tie the match. Juniors
Diandra Aliaga and
Tuva Rolstad Nilsen recorded assists on the play.
Bonney attempted both of UTRGV"s shots on goal, with
Brooklyn Nielsen (6-6-0) stopping the other one in the 55
th minute.
Senior Harlingen South alum
Erica Gonzalez (5-3-1) made four saves for UTRGV.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 4 p.m. at UMKC.
