EDINBURG – Sophomore Angel Lopez notched his first-career multi-goal match to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team past Grand Canyon University (GCU) 2-0 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
 
Freshman Bryce Box recorded his first two career points with assists on each goal.
 
Lopez scored the game-winning 27 seconds into the second half when Box sent a cross into the box that Lopez headed into the left side of the goal.
 
Then, with 11 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore Petros Agiasiotis, Box and Lopez came in toward the box with a 3-on-1 advantage, leading to the final goal.
 
Sophomore Esa Aalto (1-1-1) made four saves for his first shutout of the season and the fifth of his career.
 
Jeremy Pollard (5-4-0) finished with one save for GCU (6-7-0, 3-2-0 WAC), which outshot UTRGV (5-5-2, 2-3-1 WAC) 11-5, including 5-3 on goal.
 
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. against CSU Bakersfield at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
 
The first 200 fans in attendance will receive UTRGV soccer scarves.
  
Fans have the chance to take home "Friday Night Fútbol" soccer stress balls at every Friday home match.
