Women's Soccer Clinches Spot in WAC Tournament With Win Over Chicago State

<strong>EDINBURG </strong>– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team clinched a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament after a 6-0 win over Chicago State on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. <br />  <br /> UTRGV (8-7-3, 3-2-1 WAC) grabbed the lead early in the first half as sophomore <strong>Sarah Bonney </strong>took the pass from graduate student <strong>Andreya Barrera</strong> in the box scoring her third goal of the season at 14:18.<br />  <br /> Bonney was back at it eight minutes later for UTRGV. Senior <strong>Frida Farstad-Erksson</strong> passed it to the top of the box and Barrera hit Bonney with a touch pass as she got it over the outstretched goalie at 22:05 for the 2-0 lead. <br />  <br /> UTRGV added to their lead later in the first half and it was Bonney who had a hand it again. Bonney took the pass from freshman <strong>Gina Steiner </strong>and found redshirt sophomore <strong>Mackenzie McLeod</strong> with the sliding goal at 24:06 to make it 3-0. <br />  <br /> UTRGV took 15 shots in the first half compared to Chicago State's two with nine shots on goal. <br />  <br /> In the second half, sophomore <strong>Diana Ansah</strong> kept the scoring going as she picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and recorded her first goal of the season making it 4-0.<br />  <br /> Barrera added a goal of her own at 82:24 on the clock as she took the pass from junior <strong>Diandra Aliaga</strong> and made a move past the goalie with an open look at the net. It was Barrera's seventh goal of the season that made it 5-0.<br />  <br /> UTRGV put the cap on the scoring at 87:05 as Barrera made a pass to senior <strong>Allyson Smith </strong>who recorded her first goal of the season. <br />  <br /> Sophomore <strong>Kinga Szemik</strong> (3-4-2) recorded one save on the only shot on goal she faced in the first half. Senior <strong>Erica Gonzalez </strong>played the second half making two saves on the afternoon.<br />  <br /> Chicago State (1-18-0, 0-6-0 WAC) goalie Audra Wisehart (1-9) 20 shots on goal from UTRGV making 14 saves.<br />  <br /> UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday, October 28 when they host New Mexico State at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex in their final match of the regular season.  <div></div>
