EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team clinched the No. 3 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament after a 3-2 win over New Mexico State University on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
 
New Mexico State (9-9-2, 3-3-1 WAC) took the first lead of the game after Jody Hernandez scored her fourth goal of the season at 16:29 into the match.
 
Less than two minutes later, UTRGV (9-7-3, 4-2-1 WAC) tied things at one on a goal from freshman Gina Steiner at 18:25. Steiner took the pass from sophomore Sarah Bonney and took the shot from the top of the box and over New Mexico State's goalie Dimitri Fong (8-4-2).
 
Later in the first half, New Mexico would regain the lead after Galicia scored her 10^th goal of the season making it 2-1 heading into half. 
 
Senior Frida Farstad-Eriksson tied the match in the second half with her first goal of the season. After a New Mexico State foul, junior Tuva Rolstad Nilsen sent the free kick to the left side of the goal as Farstad-Eriksson one-touched it for the goal at 59:32.
 
At 68:55, another New Mexico State foul set up Nilsen with a free kick but this time it was Steiner who picked up the ball and took the shot over Fong for the game winner. 
 
UTRGV outshot New Mexico State 25 to seven with 10 of their shots on goal.

UTRGV is set to face WAC Tournament host Grand Canyon in the second match of the first round on Wednesday, November 1 at 9 p.m. at the GCU Soccer Stadium.
