HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team scored in the 65
th, 69
th and 76
th minutes to beat Houston Baptist University (HBU) 3-1 on Thursday at Sorrels Field.
After being held to just three shots in the first half, UTRGV's (6-6-3, 3-4-2 WAC) offense awakened in the second half, with four shots and a corner kick in the first five minutes. UTRGV only had one shot over the next 12 minutes, but in the 63
rd minute, UTRGV started taking shot after shot, and on the 11
th shot of the half, sophomore
Ilias Kosmidis found the back of the net after grabbing a loose ball in the box following a header by sophomore
Guillermo Martinez.
Just over four minutes later, sophomore
Arthur Rogers took a shot that was blocked. Sophomore
Jaakko Hietikko grabbed the rebound and fired a one-timer into the net from 18 yards out.
Six and a half minutes after that, Kosmidis sent a cross into the box that sophomore
Angel Lopez deflected into the goal to complete the scoring.
Kosmidis now has six goals, tied for the 10
th highest single-season total in NCAA Division I program history, and three assists for 15 points, tied for the ninth highest single-season total in NCAA DI program history.
UTRGV ended up outshooting HBU (5-9-0, 2-7-0 WAC) 21-11, including 7-3 on goal, after being outshot 6-3, including 2-0 on goal in the first half.
HBU scored its lone goal 2:45 into the match when
Marc Anthone converted a penalty kick.
Sophomore
Esa Aalto (2-1-2) finished with one save.
Harrison Veith (4-5-0) made three saves for HBU.
UTRGV closes out the regular season on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at Incarnate Word.
