SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team clinched a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament by defeating the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) 2-1 on Saturday at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, UTRGV (7-6-3, 4-4-2 WAC) grabbed the first lead of the match at 56:52 with a goal by junior
Isidro Martinez. His third goal of the season came off of a free kick that was set up by a UIW foul.
UIW (5-11-1, 3-7-0 WAC) tied the game later in the half as Marjan Gamsjager took the pass from Joe Brown and scored the tying goal just inside the box at 81:21.
With less than two minutes left in regulation, sophomore
Petros Agiasiotis sent a cross pass to the box where sophomore
Ilisa Kosmidis took the pass off his chest, spun inside the box scoring the winning goal.
Redshirt sophomore
Esa Aalto (2-2-2) made two saves on the night after facing three shots on goal.
UTRGV will played No. 4 San Jose State in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament on Wednesday, November 8 in Las Vegas.
