EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team knocked off defending Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Champion Utah Valley University (UVU) 3-0 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Carlos Acevedo recorded the first multi-goal match of his career, scoring the game-winning goal in the 50
th minute when he headed a pass from sophomore
Dimitris Strantzalis past
Elliott Rubio (3-5-1).
Acevedo added some insurance 10 minutes later with a shot from the upper right hand corner of the box. Sophomores
Juanito Ramirez and
Arthur Rogers assisted on the second goal.
Then, in the 73
rd minute, sophomore
Ilias Kosmidis attempted a shot that was blocked by Rubio. Junior
Isaiah Hinds fired the rebound into the back of the net to complete the scoring.
Sophomore
Andy Rios (4-3-1) posted his third shutout of the season.
UTRGV (4-4-2, 1-2-1 WAC) outshot UVU (3-8-1, 0-3-1 WAC) 8-7, including 4-0 on goal.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 9 p.m. at reigning WAC Tournament Champion UNLV.
