EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team is off to its first 5-1 start since 2003-04 after beating Florida A&M University (FAMU) 51-38 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in the opening round of the Feast of Sharing Tournament.

Laura Van Tilburg led UTRGV with 11 points and eight rebounds. Junior
Quynne Huggins scored 10 points with four rebounds and two steals. Junior
Krisynthia Sampson scored eight points with a career-high 12 rebounds (five offensive). Freshman Brownsville Saint Joseph-alum
Valeria Tapia scored a career-high seven points with three assists.
Shalaunda Burney-Robinson led FAMU (0-6) with nine points and nine rebounds.
UTRGV scored the first 10 points of the game, as Van Tilburg and Sampson each hit a pair of baskets along with a Tapia layup over the first five minutes.
UTRGV led by as many as 14 twice, including 19-5 on a Van Tilburg layup at the end of the first quarter.
FAMU responded with a pair of
Dawn King three-pointers and one by
Florence Ouattara to outscore UTRGV 16-8 in the second quarter and pull within 27-21.
FAMU got as close as one when Burney-Robinson converted a three-point play to make the score 36-35 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but
Huggins responded with three-straight jumpers to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV will look to get off to a 6-1 start for the first time since 1991-92 when it hosts Prairie View A&M in the final round of the Feast of Sharing Tournament on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi faces Florida A&M in the first game of the day at 12 p.m.
Fans donating five nonperishable food items at either game will receive a free ticket. Current UTRGV students, who already receive free admission, will receive free popcorn with their donations.
