LAS VEGAS – The fifth-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team fell 2-0 to the fourth-seeded San Jose State University on Wednesday in the opening match of the 2017 Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The first half went scoreless as both teams combined for three shots. UTRGV (7-7-3) had an opportunity to get on the board in the first half as sophomore
Ilias Kosmidis found the back of the net before it was called off because of an offside.
San Jose State (7-10-1) didn't waste much time in the second half as they got a goal by Finlay Wood at 55:49. Wood took the shot from the top of the box passed the outstretched hand of sophomore goalie
Esa Aalto (3-2-2) and into the top left corner of the goal.
San Jose State added another goal at 74:33 after Miguel Castillo took pass from Max Allen scoring the matches second goal.
UTRGV finished the match with eight shots, seven of which came in the second half while Aalto finished with two saves.
