EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team outscored Hampton 30-10 over the final nine and a half minutes to come from behind and win 80-69 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Senior
Nick Dixon led UTRGV (7-8) with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc, plus 5-of-6 from the line, with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior
Terry Winn scored 12 points with five rebounds and one block.
Jermaine Marrow led Hampton (5-10) with 22 points and six rebounds.
Trevond Barnes scored 11 points with 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Kalin Fisher scored 10 points with six rebounds.
UTRGV trailed by as much as 11 at 44-33 early in the second half, but responded with a 14-6 run to pull within 50-47.
Hampton scored nine of the next 12 points to go up 59-50 with 9:49 remaining.
Freshman
Greg Bowie responded with a jumper and then Dixon hit two free throws and a jumper as UTRGV scored the next six points and 14 of the next 16 to take a 64-61 lead. Then, after a Barnes dunk cut the lead to one, senior
Mike Hoffman nailed a three.
UTRGV's lead was still one possession at 71-68 when a three-point play by junior
Lew Stallworth sparked a 9-0 run to push the game out of reach.
In total, UTRGV outscored Hampton 47-25 over the final 16:33, going 15-of-30 from the field while holding Hampton to 6-of-23 shooting.
UTRGV is back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Our Lady of the Lake at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
