Women's Basketball Continues Record Start with Win at North Dakota State

FARGO, N.D. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team continued its record start, improving to 9-2 for the first time in program history, by beating North Dakota State University (NDSU) 82-79 on Tuesday at Scheels Center.
 
Junior Jameka Dowell led UTRGV with a career-high 23 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including a career-high 3-of-4 from behind the arc, plus a career-high 10-of-11 from the line. Junior Quynne Huggins hit a career-high tying five three-pointers for 19 points, five rebounds and a career-high three steals. Freshman Amara Graham scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting with a career-high six assists.
 
Reilly Jacobson led NDSU (5-4) with 21 points and five rebounds. Rylee Nudell scored 13 points with seven rebounds and five assists. Sarah Jacobson scored 13 points with six rebounds and five assists. Taylor Thunstedt scored 11 points with six rebounds and three assists.
 
NDSU jumped out to a 14-2 lead over the first four and a half minutes before two free throws and a layup by Graham helped UTRGV score 10-straight points to pull within two.
 
NDSU pushed its lead back out to 10 at 26-16 early in the second quarter, but sophomore Megan Johnson responded with a layup and two free throws as part of a 7-0 run to bring UTRGV within three.
 
UTRGV took the lead for the first time on the opening possession of the third quarter when Johnson made a layup to make the score 42-41.
 
UTRGV extended its lead to two possessions for the first time on a Johnson free throw at the end of the quarter that made the score 63-59.
 
A pair of Thundstedt three-pointers at the start of the fourth quarter helped NDSU go on a 13-4 run to take a 72-67 lead. Dowell responded with three-pointers to bring UTRGV within 72-70 and 76-75. A Huggins three put UTRGV back on top at 78-76 with 2:24 remaining.
 
After a Reilly Jacobson layup tied the game, Dowell hit a pair of free throw to give UTRGV the lead for good.
 
UTRGV is back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Wisconsin.
